Day of the Dead – Pre-Wedding Festivities

In any of you know any Spanish teachers in your personal life, then you know we can be a bit eccentric enthusiastic. Even though we know we are guilty of stereotyping certain features of Hispanic culture, we get way too excited over things like fiestas and salsa dancing.

So when my good friend, K, who is also a Spanish teacher, told me she was planning a Día de Los Muertos (Day of the Dead) theme for her wedding, I wasn’t a bit surprised. Not only would the wedding fall the same week as Dia de Los Muertos, but all of the preceding wedding festivities would carry the theme as well.

What kind of supportive Spanish teacher friend would I be if I didn’t jump right into the fun? From Day of the Dead themed showers to a crafting party to a Day of the Dead themed bachelorette party, this has been one festive wedding journey!

Day of the Dead Engagement Photos

I had the honor of taking the engagement photos back on one painfully hot July day. We nearly melted into the ground, but we had fun. See for yourself. Although we did take some non-themed photos in the morning, the most fun was had in this Day of the Dead themed engagement shoot we did in the evening! K’s fiance decorated a garden area with papel picado, marigolds, and candles for some sunset photos. The two were in full face make-up, courtesy of a local and extremely talented artist/make up artist extraordinaire. We took other super cute photos where the awesomeness of the face paint is much more evident, but I only requested permission to share these two non-close up photos on my blog since K – silly girl – thinks we social media/blogging people are creepy. Creepy people? Online? Psshhh!

Day of the Dead Wedding Shower

How cute were the decorations for K’s Day of the Dead themed wedding shower?

Even though she didn’t register for these sugar skull mugs, how could I not incorporate these into her wedding gift? K’s fiance, who is also a friend of mine, is a loyal coffee drinker. These mugs were a must.

Day of the Dead Crafting Party

The Spanish teacher bride had a vision for 600 paper flowers for the wedding reception. Insert that wide-eyed Emoji right here. This kind of flower power requires a large workforce of organized people (hello, teacher friends!), and a lot of hours. And snacks. Snacks help.

Day of the Dead Bachelorette Party

As one of the organizers of K’s first bachelorette party (lucky girl got two!), I used some sugar skull fabric I bought this summer to decorate with in my classroom. It was perfect as a table topper on our outdoor dinner table. The other hostess has been making more paper tissue flowers for the wedding on her own time. She brought a few to embellish the table. I had an extra sugar skull mug which we also incorporated. But that’s where the theme ended. No sugar skulls for dessert. We went with some yummy cupcakes.
